Cold Weather Guidelines For Water Wells

Protect Your Water Well In Cold Weather

What To Do For Your Well During Freezing Temperatures

In Central Texas, cold weather poses significant risks to your water well system. Freezing temperatures can cause equipment failures, burst pipes and interruptions in water supply. Below are some critical guidelines to help you protect your water well system during extreme weather. Please note that while these tips are intended to assist you, there are no guarantees that your system will not freeze in severe conditions.

Important Safety Measures

  • Always cover your well equipment as much as possible, especially around the pressure gauge area, which is highly vulnerable.
  • Ensure all exterior pipes are insulated with foam heat wrap. If possible, add additional layers like heavy blankets for extra protection.
  • Prepare a water reserve by filling up a tub or sink for basic needs like rinsing and flushing.

Cold Weather Solutions for Different Well Systems

Permanent Well System Without Storage Tank

Let the furthest outside faucet from the well run in a steady pencil-thin flow to keep water flowing through the system. Additionally, allow a steady drip at one faucet inside your home to maintain water movement.

Permanent Well System With Storage Tank And Well House

Place a lightbulb and space heater in the well house to keep the equipment warm and reduce the risk of freezing.

Permanent Well System With Storage Tank But No Well House

If you don’t have a well house, construct a makeshift tent around the equipment and place a heat lamp inside to keep it warm. For systems with a booster pump, loosely cover the pump with a tub and wrap blankets around it. Make sure the blankets are not too tight around the pump to avoid overheating.
